Kabaddi captain Sunil Kumar had only 50-50 chance after hand fracture, then a Mumbai doctor performed an unconventional treatment helping him recover in time and win gold medal.
On September 26, Kumar lifted the Asian Games kabaddi trophy with his teammates after India beat Iran 40-34 in the final, completing an unbeaten campaign and retaining the title. Behind that win sat months of careful surgery and recovery most fans never saw.
What Happened To The Captain
Kumar fractured his palm during a practice session in May, just two months before the national camp selections. The injury was not a clean break. Doctor Deepak Bhatia from Mumbai described it as "a comminuted metacarpal fracture, where the bone was broken into multiple fragments rather than a single clean break."

What Treatment Did He Get
Instead of conventional surgery, Bhatia used a minimally invasive technique already tried weeks earlier on teammate Jaideep Dahiya, who had suffered a separate hand fracture in March. Fine wires called K-wires were placed through small incisions, guided by live X-ray imaging, to hold the bone fragments together without opening up the hand further.

What Did The Doctor Think Of His Chances
Despite the tough odds at the start, Bhatia said Kumar's attitude made the difference. "Kumar, however, was determined to be fit for the trials," he said, pointing to the player's commitment through a tight recovery window.
What Did The Hospital Say
Doctor Tarang Gianchandani, group CEO of Healthcare Initiatives and head of Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital, called the recoveries of both Kumar and Dahiya a reflection of their resolve. "Dahiya and Kumar's journeys reflect their extraordinary determination and the value of coordinated surgical care and rehabilitation," Gianchandani said, adding that the hospital was proud to have supported their comeback.
What Happened At The Asian Games
Kumar eventually earned his place in the squad and led India through an unbeaten run at the tournament. The final against Iran ended 40-34 in India's favour, sealing the gold medal and continuing the country's dominance in men's kabaddi.
