Joginder Sharma announces retirement; 2007 T20 World Cup star player bids adieu to all forms of cricket

Indian pacer Joginder Sharma has announced retirement from all formats of cricket today, on February 3, 2023. The cricketer is known for his exceptional bowling in the T20 World Cup 2007 Final, where India defeated Pakistan to grab the prestigious trophy.

Reportedly, Joginder broke the news of his retirement in a letter addressed to Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In the letter, Joginder laid gratitude toward the BCCI, Haryana Cricket Association, Chennai Super Kings, and the Haryana government.

He thanked the authorities for blessing him with various opportunities to show his talent on the cricket ground. He added that 2007-2017 have been the best years of his life as he was able to get the honour of representing India at the highest level of the game.


The medium-pace bowler, now a police officer, later took to his social media handle to make the retirement news public. Joginder thanked his teammates, coaches, mentors, and support staff for their help throughout his career. The player accepted that it was a privilege to embrace cricket alongside them.



He acknowledged their support in turning his dream into a reality. In the end, Joginder thanked his fans for supporting him through the ups and downs of the game. He added that the moments spent with the fans and their support will always be the best motivation for him. The bowler also thanked his family and friends for their unconditional love and support.

Joginder Sharma played his first international match in an ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2004. He played eight matches for India, including four ODIs and four T20Is. The pacer is remembered for his spectacular performance in the India vs. Pakistan match in the 2007 T20 World Cup final.
