Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh and Nimrat Khaira's film Jodi has achieved never-before figures for a Punjabi film at the US box office. The movie had a controversial release in theatres on May 5, 2023, but has now managed to grab attention in the international market.

Diljit Dosanjh recently created quite a buzz with his performance at Coachella 2023. It seems he is now capturing the hearts of audiences overseas with his acting as well.

A report in Deadline says that the film Jodi has earned US$734,000 in the first two days of its release in the US on 125 screens. Although these figures don’t mean much in India, for a Punjabi movie made in India and released in the US, these are reportedly the first-ever opening box office collections. Jodi's total overseas collection in two days is Rs 8 crore.

According to trade website Sacnilk, Jodi collected Rs 65 lakh in India, to begin with, but caught on four days after its release, when its collections stood at Rs 4 crore gross at the domestic box office.

A local court stayed the release of Jodi due to legal trouble related to the origin of the movie’s story. Jodi is reportedly based on the lives of real-life Punjabi singers Amar Singh Chamkila and his second wife Bibi Amarjot Kaur, and their musical journey together. Ishdeep Randhawa from Patiala had filed a case against the makers of Jodi, stating that Chamkila's first wife Gurmail Kaur had already sold the exclusive rights to make Chamkila's biopic to his father Gurdev Singh. However, in November 2022, Gurdev Singh passed away.
