JK Rowling launches organisation to help victims of sexual violence
Support and advocacy center Beira's Place is run by women for women in Edinburgh and the surrounding area who have experienced abuse.

Support and advocacy center Beira's Place is run by women for women in Edinburgh and the surrounding area who have experienced abuse.
Rowling, who lives in the Scottish capital and is helping to fund the centre, has spoken in the past of being a survivor of domestic violence.
The launch comes as debate rages in the UK about recognition of gender identity, which has seen Rowling the target of militant transgender rights supporters.
Rape Crisis Scotland has a different stance on this. They say the support center should also be accessible to non-binary and trans people. A spokesperson from Beira’s Place said as, and when needed, men or individuals identifying themselves as trans women will be referred to other suitable services.
In 2020, Rowling was accused of transphobia for mocking the phrase "people who menstruate", in a row that escalated into death threats.
Beira’s Place is named after the Scottish goddess of winter. Experienced, paid support workers will run it.
