Reliance Industries is expected to retain Disney+ Hotstar as the only streaming platform following the merger of Star India and Viacom18, sources familiar with the matter told The Economic Times (ET). JioCinema will merge into Disney+ Hotstar, positioning it as the central streaming platform for the combined entity, sources told ET further.
RIL had explored various strategies for the streaming business. At one stage, it considered integrating Disney+ Hotstar into JioCinema, and there were discussions about running two separate platforms—one for sports and another for entertainment.
Previously, Dubai-based siblings, Jainam and Jivika, have offered to give the JioHotstar domain name to “Team Reliance” for free. The siblings acquired the domain from a Delhi app developer who had hoped to sell it to Reliance for funding for his education.
The siblings stated their intention on the website: "With all the discussions happening, we now think it might be best for Team Reliance to have this domain, if they want it. We are happy to give [JioHotstar domain] to them for free, with all the proper paperwork."
This decision comes after the siblings received numerous offers to buy the domain, some genuine and offering significant sums. However, they maintained that the domain was never for sale.
The siblings purchased the domain to support the developer and emphasize their “seva (service) journey.” They clarified that they never intended to profit from the domain or create controversy.
They have invited Reliance to contact them if they are interested in acquiring the domain.
