“It is a huge advantage to any company if you can stay focused on your customer instead of your competitor,” he said. In an earlier interview too, Bezos had explained his business model, “If there’s one thing Amazon.com is about, it’s obsessive attention to the customer experiencer.”
“No, they should be investing in a company that obsesses over customer experience. In the long term there's never any misalignment between customer interests and shareholder interests," he had said.

Customer obsession at Amazon
At Amazon, customer obsession comes first. The career page of Amazon lists 14 leadership principles and 'customer obsession' tops the chart. The 'customer obsession' philosophy urges leaders to “start with the customer and work backwards” to earn and keep trust. Jeff Bezos thinks it is very important to identify your true customer. “It is a huge advantage to any company if you can stay focused on your customer instead of your competitor. So then you have to identify who is your customer,” said Bezos.Bezos highlighted Amazon Prime as a standout example of customer-driven innovation. When it launched in 2005 with free, fast shipping, many dismissed the service as “too good to be true.” Over time, however, its relentless focus on customer needs proved to be a game-changer. At the Washington Post, for instance, he said the customer is the reader, not advertisers. “Advertisers want to be where there are readers. So, it’s really not complicated,” he noted.

He believes that entry-level jobs, such as working at McDonald’s, teach foundational skills that are crucial for long-term success. He emphasised that these early roles matter because they build discipline, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure.“I always advise young people: Go work at McDonald’s,” Bezos said. “You learn responsibility. You learn how to show up. You learn how to deal with people. You learn how to hustle.”
