Distributors announce postponement
The development came to light on January 7, when distributors of 'Thalapathy' Vijay-starrer in Europe and Malaysia announced on X that the release had been cancelled. The film, which was slated for a grand worldwide release on January 9, has now been shelved indefinitely, sending ripples across box office and trade circles.CBFC clearance delayed
The postponement follows delays in certification by the Central Board of Film Certification. With the required clearance not issued ahead of release, the producers approached the Madras High Court seeking urgent relief to adhere to the original release schedule. However, the court reserving its order further complicated the timeline, once again bringing the spotlight on certification delays affecting high-profile film releases.Advance bookings trigger ticketing frenzy
The deferment was announced at a time when anticipation around Jana Nayagan was at its peak. Advance bookings had already opened across Tamil Nadu, witnessing unprecedented demand. Reports of black-market ticket sales surfaced, with first-day, first-show tickets allegedly being sold for as much as Rs 5,000, far above the government-mandated cap of Rs 190.The ticketing rush left several fans frustrated, with many describing the booking process as chaotic and reiterating that every Vijay release turns into a large-scale event.
Structural issues add to release woes
Beyond certification hurdles, the film’s theatrical release has been affected by deeper industry issues. Industry sources have pointed to bulk ticket purchases by fan clubs and aggressive resale practices as major contributors to inflated ticket prices. Revenue-sharing disputes between producers and theatre owners have also added to the strain.Distributors have claimed that producers are seeking revenue shares of up to 80 per cent, leaving exhibitors with thin margins and reducing their willingness to screen the film. Together, these challenges have turned what was expected to be a celebratory release into a flashpoint, making the postponement a reflection of broader issues within the exhibition ecosystem.
