The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released stunning images of Earth taken by the Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-06), also known as Oceansat-3. The images, which were taken using the Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM), show every continent and feature the planet as it appeared between February 1 and 15, 2023. The pictures were created by combining 2,939 images and processing 300 GB of data to create a mosaic with a spatial resolution of 1 km. Different continents are visible in separate colours due to variations in wavelengths.

ISRO has stated that the images provide information about global vegetation cover on land and ocean biota, with the OCM able to sense the Earth in 13 distinct wavelengths. Oceansat-3 is a type of nanosatellite that was deployed by ISRO in November 2022, as a component of a larger grouping of satellites focused on the field of oceanography and atmospheric research.

The satellite is equipped with three primary tools, which include the Ocean Color Monitor (OCM-3), the Sea Surface Temperature Monitor (SSTM), the Ku-Band Scatterometer (SCAT-3), as well as the ARGOS system. The satellite is able to identify potential fishing zones using chlorophyll and SST, wind speed, and land-based applications.

Internet users have been amazed by the pictures, with many praising the beauty of our planet and some expressing pride in their country. The images have gone viral on social media, with users describing them as "mind-blowing" and a "feast for the eyes."

The release of the images follows a recent tweet by NASA, which shared an old picture of Earth at night that provided a clear view of human settlements across the planet.
