Pakistan Citizen's Arrest and Hamas-type attack
Muhammad Shahzeb Khan was arrested in Canada on September 4, 2024. According to federal authorities, he was planning to travel from Canada to New York to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn. The date he allegedly chose for the attack — October 7, 2024 — was intended to mark the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel.US officials said the attack was inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group, and Khan was attempting to provide material support to ISIS.
FBI confirms extradition of Pakistan Citizen
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Khan’s extradition in a post on X.“Major news… earlier this afternoon, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan… was extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism,” Patel stated.
He added that the planned date of the attack had symbolic significance.
“Khan allegedly planned his attack to occur on October 7, 2024 — the one year anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel,” the post read.
Cooperation between agencies
The FBI Director credited the quick collaboration among international law enforcement agencies for disrupting the plot.“Thankfully, the great work of FBI teams and our partners exposed those plans and shut them down,” Patel said.
He also pointed to the ongoing threat of terrorism and increasing concerns around antisemitism.
“This case is a reminder of the constant threat of terrorism facing every corner of the world — as well as the disturbing rise in threats against our Jewish communities.”
Investigation and next steps
Multiple FBI offices were involved in the case, including New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.Patel acknowledged their contributions: “@NewYorkFBI, @FBIChicago, and @FBILosAngeles” were part of the team that ensured Khan’s transfer to US custody.
Khan is now in federal custody and is expected to be tried in a court in New York. More information about the legal proceedings is awaited.
