Is YouTube down in India? Here’s what Google said about the widespread outage faced by thousands of users

Video streaming platform YouTube witnessed a widespread outage on Wednesday morning, with many users in India reporting issues in accessing the app and streaming videos.

The disruption was not limited to India. In the United States, over 240,000 users reported issues at the peak of the outage. YouTube TV and other related services also saw a spike in complaints.

In India, users of YouTube reported widespread disruptions, with data from Downdetector showing that the majority of complaints were linked to the mobile app.


According to Downdetector, 74% of users flagged issues with the YouTube app, while 16% reported problems related to video streaming and 10% cited difficulties accessing the website.

The data indicated that app-related glitches formed the bulk of the outage complaints across the country.

Google responds on YouTube outage

Responding to the outage, parent company Google acknowledged the issue in a statement.

“If you’re having trouble accessing YouTube right now, you’re not alone, our teams are looking into this and will follow up here with updates,” the company said.

In a later update, Google clarified the cause of the disruption, stating that an issue with its recommendations system prevented videos from appearing across various YouTube surfaces, including the homepage, the main app, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids.

“The homepage is back, but we’re still working on a full fix,” the company added.

When will YouTube be back up?

While services began gradually restoring for many users, Google said its teams were continuing to monitor the situation and would share further updates.
