Is using public chargers safe? Here's what FBI in US advises

Is using public chargers in public places such as airports, hotels, cafe, shopping malls, markets etc. safe? The question arises after Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the US has advised people to carry their own power banks. The FBI cautioned users about using public chargers found in public places stating that this may pose hacking risk.

FBI tweeted saying one can "avoid using free charging stations" generally found in airports, hotels or shopping centers and other public places.

"Avoid using free charging stations in airports, hotels or shopping centers. Bad actors have figured out ways to use public USB ports to introduce malware and monitoring software onto devices," FBI Denver posted on Twitter.




"Carry your own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet instead," FBI has advised.

While debate over using public chargers is not a new thing, FBI's latest advise is likely to create a storm on social media.

Earlier in 2021, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) underlined the threat of "juice jacking". "Juice jacking" is considered as a hijack on public charging docks. FCC on its website has also stated that "Cybersecurity experts have warned that criminals can load malware onto public USB charging stations to maliciously access electronic devices."
