Is there a curfew in Pune today? Here's what police said amid social media claims

Police in Pune have issued a clarification that there is no curfew imposed in the city amid reports and claims circulating on social media. The statement of the police came after rumours spread online that a 14-day curfew had been imposed in the city, reports The Times of India. Multiple reports online claimed that the Pune administration had restricted public movement and banned gatherings for a fortnight starting the night of May 26.

Is there a curfew in Pune?

The answer is NO. According to the TOI report, officials have clarified that no such curfew or citywide restriction has been announced. The clarification came after several messages and media reports circulated online claiming that authorities had imposed a ban on protests, rallies, and public gatherings amid rising fuel prices and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation during the ongoing West Asian crisis.




The viral claims also alleged that the Pune Municipal Corporation had enforced strict austerity measures for its employees, including curbs on official vehicle use, compulsory carpooling, online meetings, and mandatory use of public transport at least once a week. The 10 PM restrictions apply only to:

Street vendors
Food stalls & Khau Gallis
Paan shops
Outdoor roadside dining setups

No restriction on public movement

Pune police have launched a crackdown on unauthorised hawkers, licensed vendors violating deadline norms, and eateries operating on footpaths or beyond permitted hours. The action is mainly focused on shutting down outlets running after 10 pm without valid permission, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar told TOI on Monday.

Clarifying the move, he said no special prohibitory orders had been issued restricting public movement. “People can move freely. These are the fortnightly orders that are regularly issued by the police. The orders are meant to prevent criminals from gathering in groups and causing harm to society or properties.,” he said.

Speaking about the ongoing action against roadside eateries and other establishments, Kumar said, “Areas such as FC Road, JM Road, Karve Road, Kothrud, Baner, Kondhwa, Katraj and Phursungi attract a huge number of people late in the night for food and snacks. Such places are also frequented by criminals.,” the CP said.

“We studied the issue and found that hawkers, both the legal and illegal ones, were operating beyond the 10pm deadline. We are shutting such establishments, including paan kiosks, at 10pm,” he said.

The police are also taking action against eateries illegally occupying footpaths and causing inconvenience to pedestrians. “Some eateries were operating till 3am. We have restricted them to 10pm. Licensed establishments such as restaurants and bars can function in accordance with the deadlines mentioned in their licences,” Kumar said.
