Concerns grew about the health of US Senator Mitch McConnell, a top Republican lawmaker who has been in hospital for over three weeks

Mitch McConnell's 20-minute phone conversations with top Republican leaders have provided the clearest indication yet that the veteran senator remains actively engaged in Senate business while recovering in the hospital. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican has been hospitalized since June 14, with only limited updates from his office, fueling widespread speculation about his health.

Concerns grew about the health of US Senator Mitch McConnell, a top Republican lawmaker who has been in hospital for over three weeks. The statements from Republican leaders came after US President Donald Trump ally and right-wing influencer Laura Loomer claimed on X the Kentucky senator was in a "vegetative state" and "brain dead".

Mitch McConnell's 20-minute phone call eases concerns

"I spoke to my old friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior Senator from Kentucky. He’s still recovering in the hospital. We talked for just shy of 20 minutes ... about IRAN, UKRAINE, the unfolding situation in MAINE, my visit to the TR Presidential Library, and even a little bit of Senate history. I told him we want to see him back at work as soon as possible," he wrote in a post on X.

The update comes as questions continue to swirl about McConnell's condition following weeks of limited public information.

Senate leaders say McConnell remains fully engaged

Jennings is not the only Republican who has spoken with McConnell during his recovery. Senate Majority Leader John Thune also confirmed that he had a lengthy phone conversation with the Kentucky senator earlier this week. According to Thune's office, the two discussed several issues, including national security.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso said he also spent roughly 20 minutes speaking with McConnell by phone.

Barrasso said their discussion included Senate races, legislative priorities, the upcoming July work period, the need to pass the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), and confirming President Donald Trump's nominee for Director of National Intelligence.

According to Barrasso's office, McConnell was "fully engaged" throughout the call and is eager to return to work.

McConnell's office later distributed statements from Jennings, Thune and Barrasso to media organizations, highlighting that the senator continues to stay involved in Senate matters despite being hospitalized.

Mitch McConnell's office says he is improving

Although McConnell has remained in the hospital since June 14, his office has released only brief updates about his condition.

In its latest statement, the office told the USA Today: "The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session."

The Senate is currently in recess and is scheduled to return next week. McConnell last voted in the Senate on June 11.

Why was Mitch McConnell hospitalized?

His office has not publicly disclosed what led to the medical emergency. However, local broadcaster WLKY reported that audio from an emergency medical services dispatch suggested the incident may have involved cardiac arrest after McConnell was reportedly found unconscious at his Washington residence. His office has not confirmed that report.

Because of the lack of official details, speculation about McConnell's health has continued to grow online. Mitch McConnell has faced several health scares in recent years

Earlier this year, he was briefly hospitalized after developing flu-like symptoms.

In 2023, he suffered a concussion and fractured rib after a fall at a Washington hotel. Later that year, he drew national attention after freezing twice while speaking during public events, prompting renewed concerns about his health.

More recently, he was also seen using a wheelchair at the Capitol in the weeks leading up to his current hospitalization.

Despite those concerns, the latest Mitch McConnell 20-minute phone updates from Republican colleagues suggest the veteran lawmaker remains mentally engaged and continues following Senate business closely as he recovers.
