Gautam Gambhir Under Fire After India’s Home Whitewash vs South Africa, But Ravi Shastri Warns Fans Not to Blame Just One Person

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has had a roller-coaster journey since taking charge in July last year. Under his leadership, the team celebrated victories in the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup, but their performance in red-ball cricket at home has been disappointing. India suffered a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand last year, followed by a 2-0 clean sweep by South Africa recently. Notably, India have been whitewashed just three times in a Test series at home, with two of these instances occurring under Gambhir’s tenure.

This has sparked intense debate about whether Gambhir alone is responsible for the team’s poor performances.

Ravi Shastri Says Responsibility Lies With Entire Team

Former India all-rounder and ex-coach Ravi Shastri believes it is unfair to single out one individual for the team’s defeats. Speaking on the YouTube podcast of Prabhat Khabar, Shastri emphasised that the responsibility for losses lies with both the players and the management.

He said, “So when results come, one thing the public should remember is that players should also take responsibility. It should not be that you target one individual. It has happened to me, that is why I am speaking from experience. So it is important that the players also take the rap on the knuckles when something like this happens. There should be pride. They should feel hurt that we have lost. Until that happens, things will not move forward.”

Collective Effort Determines Success

Shastri further highlighted the team aspect of cricket, pointing out that losses cannot be pinned on a single person.

He added, “Everyone, right from the team management to the players, you can't single out one person. It's a collective decision. South Africa defeated India; no single player defeated India. South Africa played well as a team. Where did we play?”

His words underline the importance of shared responsibility, teamwork, and self-reflection in professional cricket.

India’s Home Whitewash Record

For context, India’s struggles at home are rare in Test cricket history. The first-ever whitewash at home occurred during the 1999-2000 series, when South Africa won both matches against India. The recent defeats under Gambhir have brought comparisons with that historic series, intensifying scrutiny on the current team and management.

Lessons for Team India

While Gautam Gambhir has faced criticism for the home defeats, experts like Ravi Shastri urge fans and media alike to focus on team accountability rather than targeting an individual. Red-ball cricket in India remains competitive, and addressing collective weaknesses could help the team regain its dominance at home.

Shastri’s advice is clear: pride, responsibility, and learning from losses are essential for Team India to bounce back stronger.
