IPL 2023 KKR Team Review: Check Kolkata Knight Riders' strengths, weaknesses, and key players

Chandrakant Pandit is taking over as the new coach of KKR, also Iyer's availability is uncertain, and KKR's fortunes will be heavily reliant on his fitness.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have consistently been one of the most talked-about franchises in the IPL. But a championship has eluded the Shah Rukh Khan-owned team for nearly a decade. Following a seventh-place finish in 2022, KKR hoped to regroup and signed Shakib Al Hasan in an auction for Rs 1.5 crore to bolster its middle order.

However, the franchise has suffered a setback as its captain, Shreyas Iyer, is set to miss a significant portion of the tournament due to a back injury. While KKR has not yet named a replacement captain, Iyer's absence means the team is going to be without a solid batting option higher in the order.

Strengths

KKR has an outstanding pace bowling department led by Umesh Yadav and Tim Southee. Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Shakib Al Hasan, and Shardul Thakur are among the players who can contribute with both bat and the ball.

Weaknesses

Inconsistency has been a problem for KKR in recent seasons. Despite having some of the biggest names on its roster, the team has struggled on numerous occasions. Over the years, the team has frequently relied heavily on Andre Rusell, and when the West Indies ace falters, KKR finds itself in trouble, with no Plan B. There are no other finishers besides Russell, which is a major concern. With Shreyas unlikely to be available, KKR's middle order will face a significant challenge, and players like Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh will need to step up and deliver.

Opportunity

Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Venkatesh Iyer have the potential to win the game on their own. Then there are the likes of Litton Das, David Wiese, Narayan Jagadeeshan, and Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Key players

It remains to be seen whether Nitish Rana's batting improves as a result of the added responsibility of captaincy. In addition to intelligent bowling, Shardul Thakur is an excellent lower-order batter. And Andre Russell is always the key player. If he gets started, the job is finished.
