The launch of Apple’s iPhone 17 has once again stirred conversations beyond technology, with pricing becoming the central issue. In India, the base model costs more than ₹82,000, a figure that many argue is higher than the monthly salary of most citizens. A satirical Reddit post calling this a “killer deal” went viral and opened up a wider discussion on whether smartphones have become the first big debt experience for many people, especially young buyers using credit cards for the first time. The post and its reactions highlight how the iPhone is seen not only as a device but also as a symbol of aspiration, luxury, and social status—often at the cost of financial strain.

iPhone 17 Reddit post sparks debate

On Reddit, a user wrote: "Man is it AWESOME. At just 82k in India and 70k if you source it from abroad, you get the 120Hz display and 256 gb storage on an iPhone. For the first time ever. It’s an absolutely 'killer deal' PS- this is a satirical post. Don’t kill the comedian for pointing out the circus."

The satirical remark soon drew comments from others highlighting how iPhone purchases often push people into debt.

One user said, “I’ve seen a lot of people go into debt for base 16, 15, 14 and even 13 because, well, it’s an iPhone. Randomly spotted an e-rickshaw driver use an iPhone 13 in Ayodhya last week. Overall I feel mobile phones make everyone experience debt for the first time in life.”

Another added, “Am I the only person thinking throwing 80k+ on a phone is just nuts? 80k is more than the monthly salary of most people in India.”

Several pointed out that unless a person’s profession requires such a device or they have significant disposable income, a phone priced above ₹50,000 serves more as a status symbol than a necessity.

iPhone as a symbol of luxury

Comparisons were drawn between buying an iPhone and purchasing luxury goods. One comment read, “Owning an iPhone in today’s world is just like buying a diamond. Buying and flashing luxury.”

Others criticised the excitement around features like a 120Hz display, calling it an example of “herd mentality” that benefits large tech brands.

Some also noted that the latest iPhone may push first-time buyers into credit debt. A user said, “Yup, my brother is planning to get one. This will be his first transaction with his credit card.”

The discussion reflects a growing divide between aspirational demand for high-end smartphones and concerns about financial strain. For many, buying the iPhone 17 is seen as a lifestyle choice rather than a practical purchase, raising questions on affordability, consumer debt, and the influence of brand image.
