In an unusual incident at Indore airport on Tuesday, a passenger travelling to Bengaluru was bitten by a rat in the departure area, prompting swift action from airport authorities. The passenger claimed that the rodent had suddenly entered his trousers and bitten his leg, causing immediate alarm.

According to officials, the passenger insisted on receiving a rabies injection following the bite, based on advice from his personal doctor. However, the airport’s medical facility reportedly did not have the vaccine in stock. The attending airport doctor instead administered a tetanus injection, dressed the wound, and provided antibiotic tablets.

Airport director Vipinkant Seth confirmed to PTI that the doctor, who was employed through a private hospital providing on-site medical services, was found to have acted insensitively towards the passenger. “While his behaviour was not rude, it lacked the empathy expected in such situations. We have requested the hospital to replace him with another doctor at the airport,” Seth said.

In addition to addressing the medical response, authorities also took action against the airport’s pest control measures. An initial fine of Rs 500 has been imposed on the pest control agency for failing to prevent the incident, and the housekeeping contractor has been issued a show-cause notice to explain lapses in their responsibilities.

The incident has highlighted concerns about hygiene and medical readiness at the airport, prompting officials to review both pest management and on-site healthcare services to ensure passenger safety.
