The Gurgaon-based airline delivered the heart from the operation theatre to Global Hospital in two hours and twenty-two minutes, well within the 3-hour limit stipulated for live organ transfers. A team of doctors from the Global Hospital harvested the human heart in a Vadodara hospital, carrying the heart back to Mumbai to save a life successfully. Following the successful transplant, Senior GM at Global Hospitals, Anoop Lawrence, released an official statement thanking IndiGo’s airport Security Managers, Manoj Dalvi (Mumbai) and Ramchandra Dwivedi (Ahmedabad), for their assistance.
On May 20, 2022, IndiGo managed to transport a pair of lungs from Pune to Hyderabad, working in cooperation with the Pune Police, CISF, and AAI. Commenting on the recent heart transport, Ronojoy Dutta, CEO of IndiGo, thanked his team members who were a part of the effort. He further added that the airline appreciated its opportunity to save a life and congratulated its airport staff at Vadodara and Mumbai.
Organ transplants in India are governed by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act . Transplantation laws in India are highly stringent, and one of the strict stipulations is the 3-hour time limit. According to the Colorado-based Donor Alliance, hearts and lungs stay viable for 4-6 hours, whereas kidneys can function outside the body for 24-36 hours. However, the 3-hour stipulation makes organ transplants between distant places a major challenge.
