IndiGo crew mass duty bunk triggers hilarious meme fest

A mass bunk of class at school or college can be harmless fun. But when it happens in a professional space, it can cause serious repercussions.

Last Saturday, Indigo Airlines got a serious jolt when crew members took mass sick leave. This mass bunk was reportedly a result of a walk-in recruitment drive conducted by Air India.

If reports are to be believed, Indigo crew members called in sick in droves to attend the recruitment drive. Sickness was the primary reason cited by most of them.


While a mass bunk might sound funny, the airline and its passengers bore the brunt. Missing crew members affected about 50 flights, and many passengers had to face delays because of the shortage of cabin crew.
The internet erupted in memes following this mass bunk. Many users compared the act of Indigo employees to how college students bunked their classes together for an outing. Some users highlighted the plight of Indigo management dealing with the absence of the crew, while others mentioned the airline that conducted the recruitment drive.
Many parallels were drawn with famous movies and series to bring out the incident's comedy side. Some users wondered what the crew members would face when they return to work. Another remarked that even the genuinely sick would find it difficult to prove it to the employer.
Jokes aside, the Ministry of Aviation stated that about 55% of the domestic flights were affected due to the absence of Indigo's crew members. After this, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) acknowledged the issue and asked Indigo for a clarification.

DGCA's head Arun Kumar said that the matter is being probed.
Indigo is the largest Indian airline, operating 1,600 daily flights in India and abroad. On Saturday, only 45.2% of the airline's flights operated on time, while the rest were delayed. Incidentally, Saturday was when the second phase of Air India's recruitment drive was taking place.

The incident also highlights the growing dissent of Indigo's employees against the carrier.
