It was the Pornstar Martini, a cocktail whose unusual name and bright look pushed it into the national spotlight. The drink ranked just behind idli on Google’s Most Searched Recipes in India 2025 list, showing how curiosity, food trends and social media influence are reshaping what Indians look up online.

What exactly is a Pornstar Martini?

Despite the name, the Pornstar Martini is a vodka-based cocktail known for its sweet, slightly tangy and refreshing taste. It is made using vanilla vodka, passion fruit and sparkling prosecco, giving it a fruity and bubbly finish.

The drink is popular not only for its flavour but also for its bright yellow colour and stylish presentation, which makes it a social media favourite. This is not the first time it has featured on Google’s list. It also appeared in India’s top recipe searches in 2024, showing steady interest year after year.

Pornstar Martini Drink Origin

The cocktail was created in the early 2000s by late mixologist Douglas Ankrah. He first came up with the recipe while sitting at a bar called Maverick in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1999.

Originally, the drink was named the Maverick Martini, but it failed to attract attention. Ankrah later changed the name to Pornstar Martini, believing the bold name would make people curious. In an old interview, he once explained that the name was meant to suggest glamour, not anything explicit.

The name change worked. The drink quickly gained popularity and is now one of the most recognised cocktails across the world.

Pornstar Martini Drink Recipe: How to make it at home

A traditional Pornstar Martini uses just a few ingredients:

• 50 ml vanilla vodka
• 12.5 ml passion fruit liqueur
• 25 ml passion fruit puree
• 2 spoonfuls of vanilla sugar
• 50 ml prosecco (served on the side)

All the ingredients except prosecco are shaken well with ice and poured into a chilled glass. It is usually topped with a fresh slice of passion fruit, while the prosecco is served separately to sip along with the drink.

Many people now make customised versions using mango, pineapple or kiwi puree instead of passion fruit.

Apart from idli and the Pornstar Martini, several traditional items featured on Google’s trending list. These included ukadiche modak, thekua, ugadi pachadi, thiruvathari kali, kolukattai and even Yorkshire pudding.
