India gained independence on 15 August 1947 after more than two centuries under British rule. The event marked a turning point in history, when India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, declared the country’s “tryst with destiny” in his midnight speech and hoisted the tricolour for the first time. Since then, the tradition of the sitting Prime Minister leading the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort has continued.

The day holds significance as both a tribute to the country’s freedom fighters and as a reflection on its journey as a democratic republic. It serves as a reminder of the principles enshrined in the Constitution—justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Independence Day 2025: Ceremony schedule at Red Fort

The official programme will begin with the presentation of a Guard of Honour by the Armed Forces and the Delhi Police to the Prime Minister. This will be followed by the unfurling of the tricolour, accompanied by the National Anthem and the 21-gun salute. Helicopters of the Indian Air Force will shower flower petals over the venue.

Prime Minister Modi will then deliver his Independence Day address, outlining key achievements of the past year and priorities for the future. After the speech, the National Anthem will be played once again, and the ceremony will conclude with the release of tri-coloured balloons into the sky.

Honouring sanitation workers at Red Fort

This year, 50 top-performing Swachhta Karamcharis from Delhi will be honoured as special guests at the Red Fort ceremony. Officials said each zonal office has been asked to nominate five sanitation workers—three women and two men—along with their spouses. Nominations are being reviewed by the Ministry of Defence, with the final list based on each worker’s contribution to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in their area.

According to the order accessed by PTI, the Delhi Environmental Management Services headquarters has been designated as the nodal agency to compile the final list of invitees.
