Independence Day 2022: Tiranga at ISS, Tiranga flutters at stratospheric heights

The tiranga is flying proudly over major landmarks across the country to celebrate 75 years of Independence. It's also being hoisted in different parts of the world by the diaspora. And, this one is unique, the national flag was unfurled at a height of over 30 kms - in the upper reaches of the stratosphere - by Space Kidz India.

The aerospace organisation which aims at creating young scientists sent it up on a balloon. They released a video which showed the fluttering tricolour attached to a balloon miles above the surface of the earth

"Celebrating 75 Years of Independence by unfurling the Indian Flag @ 30 km in Near Space," Space Kidz India posted to Twitter, tagging the PMO and ISRO.


A photo of the Indian flag at the International Space Station (ISS) was shared during the day by Indian-American astronaut Raja Chari.

Raja Chari, who returned in April after a six-month stint at the ISS, shared a picture of India's flag from the station seen against a backdrop of the earth.

NASA astronaut Chari's grandfather was a mathematics professor in Telangana. His father Sreenivas V Chari moved to the US and settled there.

"On Indian Independence eve I’m reminded of the Indian diaspora that I could see from @Space_Station where my immigrant father’s home town of Hyderabad shines bright. @nasa is just 1 place Indian Americans make a difference every day. Looking forward to @IndianEmbassyUS celebration," he wrote.

Indian space agency ISRO recently tweeted a video of greetings from the International Space Station. It was a message by European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.

"Greetings from the International Space Station. it is a pleasure to congratulate India on 75 years of Independence," she said.
