Axar Patel is likely to play an important role with both bat and ball, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh could lead the pace attack. Shreyas Iyer on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's place in India's playing XI

India captain Shreyas Iyer has indicated that teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will need to be patient as he waits for regular opportunities in the senior team. With Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson performing consistently at the top of the order, India are not expected to rush the youngster into the playing XI.

Speaking ahead of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, Iyer said Sooryavanshi had several years ahead of him to establish his place in international cricket.

"It's important that a talent like him (Sooryavanshi) should always be happy around the dressing room," Iyer said.

"He is very young, he has more years to get opportunities. It's not like he can walk in right now, because our openers are scoring consistently, and they have won the World Cup."

Sooryavanshi has featured in eight of India's 21 T20Is since being included in the squads for the England and Ireland tours earlier this year, according to the details provided. He was also given an opportunity to open during the Asian Games, with Samson moving down to No. 3.

Iyer believes exposure to overseas conditions will help the teenager understand how to approach different pitches and prepare for future opportunities.

"So, if you see, when he is coming overseas, he will get a fair idea how to play on these particular wickets," Iyer said.

"Next time, whenever he comes in these conditions, he will be very well-prepared. And he can also instruct the other team members, whoever comes here for the first time."

Christchurch Hagley Oval pitch report: What can India expect?

Hagley Oval in Christchurch is known for offering assistance to seam bowlers, particularly when conditions are cool or overcast. The surface can provide movement and bounce, making the opening overs important for both teams.

India's batters may need to adjust their approach after playing on more batting-friendly surfaces at home. New Zealand's seamers could look to exploit any early movement, while India's bowling attack will aim to put the hosts under pressure with disciplined lines and lengths.

The toss and the conditions on match day could influence the teams' final combinations, particularly the choice between an additional specialist spinner and another pace option.

IND vs NZ 1st T20I: What to expect

India will look to begin the series strongly, but adapting to Christchurch conditions could prove an early test. The opening combination of Samson and Abhishek, Iyer's leadership and the balance of the bowling attack will be key talking points ahead of the first match. Sooryavanshi's place in the side will also attract attention after Iyer's comments, although the captain has made it clear that the youngster's development will take priority over rushing him into a settled combination.
