In any emergency, Delhiites will soon need to dial just one number for instant help
Delhi is introducing a single emergency number, 112, for all services. Residents can now dial 112 for police, fire, ambulance, and disaster management. Assistance will also be available via a mobile app, emergency button, SMS, and online platforms...

Announcing the initiative, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the national emergency number, notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs, will soon be fully implemented in the national capital.
One Number for All Emergencies
Under the new system, citizens will be able to reach the police, fire services, ambulance and disaster management authorities by dialling 112.“Depending on the nature of the emergency, the concerned agency will be alerted immediately,” Gupta said. “This ensures quicker response and better coordination during critical situations.”
She added that help can be sought not only through phone calls but also via a mobile application, panic button, SMS and online platforms, a crucial feature for situations where victims may be unable to speak.
ERSS 2.0 to Power the New Emergency System
The unified helpline will operate through Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) 2.0, a modern, technology-driven platform designed to handle emergency alerts from multiple sources. All calls, app alerts, SMS messages and online requests will be received at a single Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), ensuring streamlined response management.
Real-Time Tracking and Faster Response
One of the key features of ERSS 2.0 is real-time location tracking. As soon as an emergency call or alert is received, the system automatically identifies the caller’s location, removing the need for the victim to explain where they are.“This allows the nearest police vehicle, ambulance or fire tender to be dispatched immediately,” Gupta said. “It significantly reduces response time and improves efficiency during the golden hour.”
The system will also enable real-time monitoring of:
- Location of the incident
- Vehicle dispatch status
- Estimated arrival time
Focus on Faster Response and Accountability
According to the Chief Minister, the integrated system will improve accountability by enabling constant oversight from the control room. A single call will now trigger coordinated action from multiple emergency services, reducing confusion and delays.Phased Implementation Plan
The rollout of the 112 emergency helpline will take place in stages:- Phase 1: Integration of all existing emergency numbers into 112
- Phase 2: Technical upgrades and system testing
- Phase 3: Public awareness campaigns and training of call handlers
- Phase 4: Evaluation and system refinement
A Major Step Towards Safer Cities
With the launch of the 112 unified emergency helpline, Delhi joins the nationwide effort to modernise emergency response systems. The initiative is expected to improve response time, reduce confusion during crises, and enhance public safety across the capital.Once fully implemented, a single call to 112 will be all that is needed to seek help, anytime, anywhere in Delhi.
