What happens to Christmas trees after the festive season? In Alabama, some discarded trees are getting a rather unexpected second life, helping rebuild sand dunes along the Gulf Coast.

What began in 2021 as a small environmental initiative has grown into an annual coastal restoration effort in Gulf Shores. Around 200 high school students and community volunteers now take part each year, placing recycled Christmas trees along the beach and planting thousands of native coastal plants around them.

The idea is simple: use old trees to trap drifting sand, then use native vegetation to help hold that sand in place.

How Christmas trees help rebuild sand dunes

Christmas trees can act as natural sand traps when placed along vulnerable sections of a beach.

As wind blows loose sand across the shoreline, the branches of the discarded trees slow the movement of the sand. Some of the sand then settles around the branches and gradually builds up.

Over time, the trees can become partially or completely buried beneath the accumulating sand, helping create the foundation of a new dune.

The trees are not intended to provide a permanent solution on their own. Their main role is to help collect sand quickly, giving vegetation a better base on which to grow.

Students plant thousands of native plants

Once the trees have helped trap sand, native coastal plants play an important role in stabilising the developing dunes.

Around 3,000 native plants are planted each year as part of the project, including sea oats (Uniola paniculata) and panicgrass (Panicum amarum).

Sea oats are particularly valuable to dune ecosystems because their extensive root systems help bind sand together. As the plants grow and spread, they can make the dunes more stable and better able to withstand strong winds and storms.

From Christmas trees to coastal protection

Sand dunes are more than just piles of sand along the beach. They form an important natural defence against coastal erosion, storm surges and powerful waves.

Healthy, vegetation-covered dunes can help protect roads, buildings and inland habitats during severe weather.

This makes the Christmas tree recycling programme more than an unusual way to dispose of festive waste. The discarded trees provide a temporary structure that helps the beach capture sand, while the plants provide longer-term stability.

Alabama communities give old trees a second life

The project also gives local residents a simple way to recycle their Christmas trees after the festive season.

The City of Gulf Shores operates collection points where residents can drop off trees that have been stripped of decorations and other materials. The collected trees can then be transported to suitable sections of the beach for restoration work.

Students and volunteers are involved in placing the trees and planting vegetation, turning the project into a hands-on environmental learning experience.

Instead of ending up in a landfill, a Christmas tree that once stood in someone's living room can therefore become part of a coastal restoration effort.

Why the Gulf Coast needs stronger dunes

The Gulf Coast is regularly exposed to hurricanes, storms and strong winds, all of which can damage beaches and remove valuable sand.

When vegetation is lost, dunes can become more vulnerable to erosion. Restoring vegetation helps create stronger root networks that hold sand together and support the development of healthier dune systems.

The approach also provides an opportunity for young people to see coastal restoration in action rather than simply learning about it in a classroom.

A simple idea with a bigger environmental purpose

The Alabama project shows how an everyday household item can be repurposed for an entirely different job.

A discarded Christmas tree may seem destined for the rubbish pile once the festive season ends. Along the Gulf Coast, however, its branches can help catch wind-blown sand, while thousands of native plants help turn that trapped sand into a more stable dune.

For the students involved, the annual project offers a hands-on lesson in coastal ecology, and for Alabama's beaches, it provides another tool in the fight against erosion.
