Elvis Presley purchased Graceland in Memphis on March 25, 1957, for $102,500. He was only 22 years old at the time and bought the mansion along with 13.8 acres of surrounding land. The mansion measured 10,266 square feet when Presley purchased it. He bought the property as a home for himself, his parents and his paternal grandmother.

His family moved into Graceland on May 16, 1957, after renovations were completed. Presley was away filming “Jailhouse Rock” at the time and spent his first night at the mansion on June 26, 1957.

Graceland Was Built In 1939

Graceland was originally built in 1939 and was part of a much larger farm. The property was named after Grace Toof, who was connected to the family that owned the land.


When Presley bought the estate, the area around it was far less developed than it is today. The property offered him and his family considerably more space and privacy.

How Elvis Changed Graceland

During the nearly two decades Presley lived at Graceland, the mansion underwent several renovations and additions.

Some of its most famous spaces, including the Jungle Room, TV Room and Pool Room, became closely associated with the singer.

Graceland also served as Presley’s private retreat while he continued recording music, making films and performing. He lived at the property until his death in August 1977.

Graceland Opened To The Public In 1982

Following Presley’s death, Graceland was transformed from a private family home into a public attraction. The mansion opened for tours on June 7, 1982, allowing fans to see the rooms and spaces associated with the singer’s life.

Since then, Graceland has become a major tourist destination and has welcomed more than 20 million visitors from around the world.

Graceland Is Now A Historic Landmark

Today, Graceland features exhibits showcasing Presley’s career, personal belongings, automobiles and other memorabilia. The grounds also include the Meditation Garden, where Presley and members of his family are buried.

Graceland was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

The National Park Service identifies Graceland as the primary residence where Presley spent 20 of his 22-year career.
