But Sir Alexander Fleming decided to take a closer look and his research led to the discovery of penicillin, the world's first true antibiotic—a breakthrough that has saved millions of lives and transformed modern medicine.

The mold that caught Alexander Fleming's attention
Alexander Fleming was working in the Laboratory of the Inoculation Department at St. Mary's Hospital in London, studying the influenza virus. When he returned, one of those plates had been contaminated by a mold. Fleming did not discard it and observed something unusual. The bacteria surrounding the mold had disappeared, while colonies farther away continued to grow normally.
It was clear that the mysterious mold was producing something capable of killing harmful bacteria.
"The staphylococcus colonies became transparent and were obviously undergoing lysis … the broth in which the mold had been grown at room temperature for one to two weeks had acquired marked inhibitory, bactericidal and bacteriolytic properties to many of the more common pathogenic bacteria," Fleming wrote in a 1929 paper published in the British Journal of Experimental Pathology.

He also described the mold colony as a:"fluffy white mass which rapidly increases in size and after a few days sporulates" The colony eventually changed colour from dark green to black and then bright yellow.
The accidental discovery that became penicillin
Fleming identified the mold as belonging to the Penicillium genus and named the antibacterial substance it produced penicillin. Early experiments showed that penicillin worked remarkably well against many gram-positive bacteria, although it had little effect on gram-negative organisms.Looking back on that historic moment, Fleming famously said: "One sometimes finds what one is not looking for. When I woke up just after dawn on Sept. 28, 1928, I certainly didn't plan to revolutionize all medicine by discovering the world's first antibiotic, or bacteria killer. But I guess that was exactly what I did."
Fleming discovered it, but others made it a medicine
Although Fleming recognized penicillin's extraordinary potential, turning it into a usable drug proved far more challenging. By 1931, he had largely stopped working on the project.Nearly a decade later, scientists Howard Florey and Ernst Chain at the University of Oxford revived Fleming's research. They developed methods to purify penicillin and demonstrated that it could successfully treat bacterial infections in mice. Their work paved the way for penicillin to become a practical medicine for humans.
The antibiotic that helped save lives during World War II
The first successful treatment of a patient with streptococcal septicemia in the United States came in 1942. But supplies were extremely limited.As World War II intensified, demand for penicillin grew rapidly because it dramatically reduced deaths from infected wounds and lowered the number of amputations among injured soldiers.
Historical records show that only 400 million units of penicillin were available during the first five months of 1943. By the end of World War II, U.S. pharmaceutical companies were producing around 650 billion units every month, making the antibiotic widely available.
How penicillin changed modern medicine
Before antibiotics, common bacterial infections frequently became life-threatening.Penicillin revolutionized medical care by making it possible to treat illnesses such as:
- Bacterial endocarditis
- Meningitis
- Pneumococcal pneumonia
- Gonorrhea
- Syphilis
It also made surgeries significantly safer by reducing the risk of deadly postoperative infections. Today, penicillin remains one of the most widely used antibiotics in the world and laid the foundation for the development of many other life-saving antibacterial drugs.
