IMD noted that central India and interior Maharashtra are likely to experience a gradual rise in day temperatures over the next four to five days. In Gujarat, the maximum temperatures are expected to increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next three days before dropping by the same range. WMO calls for improved early warning systems
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) appealed to all UN member countries to address the gaps in early warning systems worldwide. WMO highlighted that despite significant progress in forecasting, there are still gaps in observation networks, accuracy, and access to quality climate and hydrological data.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the importance of early warning systems, calling them "necessities and sound investments," capable of providing a nearly ten-fold return.
Hottest year on record
WMO recently confirmed that 2024 was the hottest year recorded so far, with ocean warming and rising sea levels speeding up. The organisation also noted that glacier retreat, melting ice, and more extreme weather events like severe tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, storm surges, flooding, droughts, and wildfires could lead to long-term changes.Inputs from TOI
