The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued health risk warnings due to an intense heatwave sweeping across several states. Early April has already brought soaring temperatures, particularly in Konkan and Vidarbha in Maharashtra, as well as southwest Rajasthan. These regions are witnessing temperatures much higher than the seasonal average.

Severe Heat Triggers Alerts

IMD has placed Maharashtra and southwest Rajasthan under an orange alert, urging people, especially infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses, to take extreme precautions. Officials have advised residents to avoid direct heat exposure and ensure proper hydration to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Pune Records Its Hottest Day

Weather experts reported that Pune experienced its hottest day of the season on Wednesday, with Lohegaon and Koregaon Park recording a high of 40.2°C. Other areas in the Pune region, including Rajgurunagar, Shirur, and Dhamdhere, also saw temperatures crossing 40°C.

"Throughout March, Konkan’s average maximum temperature has been 2-3 degrees above normal, and the heatwave is now extending to other regions," a weather expert from the Vagaries of Weather blog stated.

Heatwave Conditions in Rajasthan and Mumbai

Rajasthan also saw heatwave conditions at isolated locations on Wednesday. Parts of North Konkan, including Mumbai, experienced extreme heat earlier in the week.

Relief Expected Soon

Meteorologist Sanap has forecasted that temperatures will begin to decline from Thursday in some parts of India, offering relief from the sweltering heat. However, Maharashtra’s Akola remained the state’s hottest city, reaching 41.3°C—a staggering 4.6 degrees above normal. Chandrapur followed close behind at 40.6°C (+3.4° above normal).

With summer setting in early, authorities are urging people to remain cautious, stay indoors during peak hours, and drink plenty of fluids to combat the extreme heat.
