'Idli ATM': Video of machine in Bengaluru vending idlis 24x7 is going viral

A video of an idli bot or 'idli ATM' in Bengaluru - where else - is going viral on social media gladdening the hearts of those who always wished there was this hot, steaming breakfast available round the clock.

The automated idli-making machine is set up at Freshot, and can 24x7 make and dispense 72 idlis in just 12 minutes, complete with sides like podi and chutney.

The process is simple as seen in the video. Scan the QR code placed near the ATM, place your order and make the payment. Let the ATM then scan the resulting code available on your mobile, and the food will be available hot and packed in close to a minute.


A report in the Deccan Herald said Hiremath got the idea in 2016 when his daughter was unwell and he couldn't get warm idlis for her late at night.

"The only way to have access to such food all the time was to build an automatic machine,” Hiremath, a computer engineer, was quoted as saying.

Reports said it took them a few prototypes to get the final one and they had to work on the standard operating procedure, including batter consistency, to make it working round the clock without a hitch.

This idli bot is reportedly the first fully-automated cooking and dispensing machine for a South Indian breakfast. Freshot is available in two locations in Bengaluru and the duo plan to expand their presence in major centres and offices and airports.
