Hyderabad: Office cab driver arrested for allegedly raping IndiGo crew member. Here's what he confessed

Police have arrested a 23-year-old cab driver for allegedly raping a woman cabin crew member from IndiGo inside his taxi on July 20, while she was on her way to the airport. The RGIA outpost police picked him up from his residence in the Siddhanti area of Shamshabad on Tuesday, and he reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation, according to police. A court has since sent him to judicial remand. IndiGo has confirmed the incident and says it is cooperating with investigators, a PTI report stated.

How the Assault Allegedly Happened

The woman had booked the cab to reach the airport for her shift. As the vehicle approached the airport, the driver allegedly took a detour through a low-traffic stretch, telling her he needed to attend nature's call.

"He was not supposed to take a detour, but since he told the woman that he had to attend a nature's call, she did not object. He stopped the car near an under-construction international school and got out. A little while later, he suddenly opened the back door and forced himself upon the woman inside the cab," said an RGIA police official.


Police say the driver then fled the scene in the cab, leaving the woman alone at the isolated spot.

"He Confessed to Committing the Offence"

Using details provided by the woman, police identified the accused as a 23-year-old driver from the Siddhanti area in Shamshabad and apprehended him shortly after.

"We arrested the accused from Shamshabad. During the interrogation, he confessed to committing the offence," RGIA outpost inspector B Kiran Kumar said.

IndiGo Responds

IndiGo confirmed the case in a statement to The Indian Express, saying it was "aware of the matter and understand that it is currently under investigation by the relevant law enforcement agencies."

"We are fully cooperating with the authorities and remain committed to supporting them, as required. During this difficult time, we stand by our colleague and are extending our support to her and her family," the airline's spokesperson said.

Victim Taken for Counselling and Medical Exam

The woman contacted police soon after the incident and was taken to the Bharosa Centre, which provides counselling support to survivors of abuse. Officers registered a rape case based on her statement, and she was sent for a medical examination as part of standard procedure.

The accused was produced in court following his arrest and sent to judicial remand. The case will now proceed through the standard legal process.
