How to clean a stainless steel sink at home: Follow these easy steps to remove food buildup, bad odours, stains and water spots for a cleaner, shinier kitchen

A kitchen sink is used every day to wash dishes, rinse vegetables and clean utensils, but it also needs regular cleaning. A dirty stainless steel sink can develop unpleasant odours, food buildup and water spots over time. Regular cleaning can help keep the sink more hygienic while also maintaining its appearance.

Before you begin, remove all dishes, utensils and leftover food from the sink. Throw away food scraps and rinse the surface with warm water to remove loose dirt.

Things You Need To Clean A Stainless Steel Sink

Keep these items ready before you start:

  • Dish soap
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Ice cubes
  • A non-scratch sponge or soft brush
  • Stainless steel cleaner or polish
  • Paper towels or a microfiber cloth
  • Lemon juice, if required
Step 1: Empty The Sink

Start by removing all dishes, pots, pans and other items from the sink. Clear away any food scraps or debris before rinsing the surface with warm water.

Step 2: Clean The Garbage Disposal

If your sink has a garbage disposal, check for any visible food particles or buildup. Add a handful of ice cubes along with a splash of vinegar and a small amount of baking soda. Lemon juice can also be added if desired.

Run the disposal to help loosen buildup and reduce unpleasant odours. Once it has been switched off completely, use a small brush to carefully clean around the disposal area and remove any remaining food particles, grease or stuck-on debris.

Cleaning this area first is useful because stainless steel cleaner works better when the surface is already free from food and grime.

Step 3: Rinse The Sink

Rinse the entire sink thoroughly with warm water to wash away loosened dirt and residue.

Step 4: Scrub The Surface

Apply a little dish soap and use a non-scratch sponge or soft brush to clean the sink. Scrub the faucet, handles and other metal fixtures as well.

Avoid using abrasive scrubbers, as they can leave scratches on the stainless steel surface.

Step 5: Apply Stainless Steel Cleaner

Once the sink has been cleaned, apply a stainless steel cleaner or polish according to the product instructions. Leave it on for around 10 minutes if the product recommends this, allowing it to work on stains and buildup.

Step 6: Rinse And Dry Thoroughly

Rinse the sink and fixtures well to remove all traces of the cleaner. Then dry everything completely with a microfiber cloth or paper towel.

Drying the surface can help reduce water spots and leave the stainless steel looking cleaner and shinier.

How Often Should You Clean Your Stainless Steel Sink?

For everyday maintenance, give the sink a quick rinse and wipe at the end of the day. This can help prevent food particles, residue and water spots from accumulating.

A more thorough cleaning can be done about once a week. If the sink gets heavy use, particularly after preparing a large meal, cleaning it soon afterwards can help prevent lingering smells, stains and stuck-on food.
