The South American side has won the title three times, finished as runners-up on three occasions and will play its seventh final when it faces Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 title clash.

Argentina's World Cup final appearances came in 1930, 1978, 1986, 1990, 2014, 2022 and 2026.

1930: Argentina vs Uruguay

Argentina reached the inaugural FIFA World Cup final in 1930, taking on host nation Uruguay in Montevideo. The tournament featured 13 teams, with all matches played in the Uruguayan capital. Argentina advanced after topping its group and defeating the United States 6-1 in the semi-finals.

In the final, Argentina held a 2-1 lead at half-time before Uruguay mounted a second-half comeback to secure a 4-2 victory and become the first FIFA World Cup champions. Argentina finished as runners-up in the tournament's first edition.

1978: Argentina vs Netherlands

Argentina won its first FIFA World Cup title in 1978 after defeating the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in Buenos Aires. Playing on home soil, the hosts were led by Mario Kempes, who finished as the tournament's top scorer with six goals.

Kempes gave Argentina the lead in the final before the Netherlands equalised late in normal time to force extra time. Kempes restored Argentina's advantage and Daniel Bertoni added another goal to seal the nation's maiden World Cup triumph.

1986: Argentina vs West Germany

Argentina claimed its second World Cup crown at the 1986 tournament in Mexico, inspired by Diego Maradona's outstanding performances.

Maradona scored twice in the quarter-final against England, including the famous "Hand of God" goal and a memorable solo effort. He also netted twice against Belgium in the semi-finals before Argentina defeated West Germany 3-2 in the final. Jorge Burruchaga scored the winning goal seven minutes from time after West Germany had erased a two-goal deficit.

1990: Argentina vs West Germany

Argentina returned to the final four years later but lost to West Germany in Rome.

After defeating Italy in a penalty shootout in the semi-finals, Argentina faced West Germany in a closely contested final. Andreas Brehme's 85th-minute penalty secured a 1-0 victory for the Germans, while Argentina finished the match with Gustavo Dezotti and Pedro Monzon sent off.

2014: Argentina vs Germany

Argentina reached the final in Brazil but was beaten by Germany after extra time.

Germany entered the title match after defeating hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semi-finals. The final remained goalless until Mario Gotze scored with a well-taken extra-time volley to hand Germany the World Cup.

2022: Argentina vs France

Argentina won its third FIFA World Cup title by defeating France in one of the most memorable finals in the tournament's history.

Despite losing their opening match to Saudi Arabia, Lionel Messi inspired Argentina's run to the final. Messi scored twice against France, while Kylian Mbappe completed a hat-trick as the match ended 3-3 after extra time. Argentina prevailed in the penalty shootout to lift the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

2026: Argentina vs Spain

Argentina will make its seventh FIFA World Cup final appearance when it faces Spain in the 2026 final. The match will determine whether the South American side wins its fourth World Cup title or finishes as runners-up for the fourth time.
