The hottest day on record in the UK caused as trains were cancelled, firefighters worked overtime to control blazes and people focussed all their energies on trying to keep cool.

As temperatures crossed 40C for the first time ever, some took a day off from work and headed to the beach while others stayed home to escape the sun

And there were some who went to work simply because their office had an air conditioner and their home didn't. Jt didn't help that houses in Britain are generally built to retain heat.

As pictures of Britons cooling themselves off in pools, some who come from countries where 40C is a way of life every summer started wondering: How did they colonise very hot countries?

"And they wore coats too," another user pointed out.

One user offered an explanation: "Hill stations. Moved the whole machinery of government there. Very manly, efficient it was too."

Others pointed out it was not alright to make jokes about colonialism when people in the UK were suffering health consequences because of the extreme heat.
