Driving through the Qinling Zhongnanshan Tunnel in central China is unlike entering an ordinary highway tunnel. For about 15 minutes, motorists travel beneath one of China's toughest mountain crossings, passing through an 18.02-kilometre underground route carved into the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi Province.

The grey concrete ceiling suddenly transforms into glowing blue skies, fluffy white clouds and colourful lighting effects, creating the illusion that drivers have briefly emerged into daylight before continuing underground.

While the display looks impressive, it wasn't built for decoration. Engineers designed the "artificial sky" to reduce driver fatigue, ease anxiety and make one of the world's longest highway tunnels safer to travel through.

An 18-kilometre shortcut through one of China's toughest mountain ranges

For centuries, the Qinling Mountains formed a natural barrier between northern and southern China.

Before the tunnel opened, travelling between Xi'an and Zhashui meant navigating steep, winding mountain roads that were often affected by snow, ice and poor weather, especially during winter.

To solve the problem, China launched a massive engineering project. Construction of the Qinling Zhongnanshan Tunnel began in 2001, and it officially opened to traffic in January 2007.

The tunnel consists of two parallel highway bores, each measuring 18.02 kilometres, making it one of the world's longest twin-bore highway tunnels when it was completed.

The new route dramatically reduced travel time, allowing drivers to cross the mountains in less than an hour.

Why engineers created an artificial sky underground

Building a tunnel this long created another challenge that had nothing to do with rock or concrete.

Engineers had to think about how drivers would react to spending more than 15 minutes inside a confined underground space.

Research has shown that long tunnels can increase visual fatigue, reduce concentration and make some drivers feel anxious as they stare at the same walls and lighting for extended periods.

To tackle that problem, designers introduced three specially illuminated sections inside each tunnel bore.

Located roughly every five kilometres, each lighting zone stretches for about 150 metres and projects scenes resembling blue skies, white clouds, sunrises and natural landscapes.

Instead of feeling like one endless underground drive, motorists experience what appears to be several shorter tunnel sections, helping break the monotony and keep them alert.

According to the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Transport, the system was created specifically to reduce driver fatigue and psychological stress.

Coverage by CCTV also explained that the lighting gives motorists the feeling of briefly emerging into daylight before continuing their journey beneath the mountains.

The engineering behind the massive tunnel

Excavating more than 18 kilometres through the Qinling Mountains presented enormous engineering challenges.

Workers had to deal with hard rock, groundwater, geological faults and the need to maintain fresh air deep underground.

To make the tunnel safe, engineers built:

  • Two separate traffic tunnels running side by side
  • Emergency cross-passages connecting both bores
  • Three deep ventilation shafts that divide the tunnel into ventilation zones
  • Advanced ventilation systems to maintain air quality

The project also introduced new technologies for fire protection, traffic monitoring and emergency rescue that helped establish new standards for long highway tunnels in China.

Safety goes far beyond the blue skies

The colourful ceiling may be the tunnel's most photographed feature, but it is only one part of a much larger safety system.

According to the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Transport, the tunnel includes:

  • Surveillance cameras installed every 125 metres
  • Automatic incident detection systems
  • Fire detection equipment
  • Emergency communication networks
  • Intelligent traffic management systems
  • Integrated ventilation and rescue controls

These systems work together to help operators respond quickly to accidents, fires or other emergencies inside the tunnel.

A tunnel designed for both engineering and human comfort

Nearly two decades after opening, the Qinling Zhongnanshan Tunnel remains one of China's most remarkable infrastructure projects.

Its artificial sky demonstrates that modern engineering isn't just about drilling through mountains—it also involves understanding how people experience long journeys.

By combining advanced technology with thoughtful design, engineers transformed one of China's toughest mountain crossings into a safer, faster and far more comfortable drive beneath the Qinling Mountains.
