If your Wi-Fi turns weak the moment you walk into the bedroom or the kitchen, you have probably already tried the usual fixes, restarting the router, moving closer to it, or yelling at your internet provider. But there is a much cheaper household trick that keeps resurfacing online: using kitchen aluminum foil to reshape your router's signal.

It sounds like something out of a "jugaad", but this one actually has real science behind it. Back in 2017, computer scientists at Dartmouth College in the US tested the idea formally. Their research, built around a project called WiPrint, found that a properly shaped foil reflector placed near a router's antenna could noticeably redirect Wi-Fi signals, strengthening them in one direction while cutting down leakage in another. In their tests, a correctly shaped reflector pushed signal strength up by roughly 50 percent in the target direction, while reducing unwanted signal spillover elsewhere by close to 75 percent.

The key word here is "redirect," not "amplify." Foil cannot add power to your router or make it broadcast faster internet than your plan allows. What it can do is act like a mini satellite dish, bouncing the signal your router already produces toward the room where you actually need it, instead of letting it leak out through a window or an unused wall.

Here are seven tricks to boost WiFi signals with aluminium foil

1. Shape the foil into a curve, not a flat sheet
A flat piece of foil taped to the wall does very little. Signals need a curved, dish-like surface to bounce properly in one direction, the same principle behind satellite dishes and old-school antenna boosters. Mould the foil into a gentle "C" or bowl shape rather than leaving it flat.

2. Place it behind the router, not around it
Position the curved foil a few centimetres behind your router's antenna, on the side facing a wall, window, or empty balcony, anywhere the signal is currently being wasted. This turns the foil into a kind of "virtual wall" that pushes the signal back into the house instead of letting it escape outdoors.

3. Point the curve toward your Wi-Fi dead zone
Once the foil is in place, angle it so the open side of the curve faces the room where your signal is weakest, a bedroom, a study, or a far corner of the house. Small adjustments in angle can noticeably change which room benefits.

4. Keep the shiny side facing the antenna

Aluminum foil has one glossy side and one duller side. For reflecting radio waves most effectively, keep the shinier surface facing the router's antenna.

5. Never wrap the entire router in foil
This is the most important rule, and the easiest mistake to make. Fully wrapping your router in foil does not boost the signal, it blocks it almost completely, since a closed layer of metal traps radio waves inside instead of letting them out. Use foil only as a partial, curved reflector, never as a full cover.

6. Fix router placement first, then add the foil
Foil can only reshape a signal that already exists. It cannot push Wi-Fi through concrete walls, large metal appliances, or lift shafts. Before experimenting with foil, make sure the router is centrally placed and elevated, away from thick walls and metal furniture. Think of the foil trick as a fine-tuning step, not a fix for bad router placement.

7. Test it with a speed-test app before and after
Since results vary from home to home, run a speed test in your weak-signal room before setting up the foil, then run it again afterwards. If you want more consistent results than a hand-shaped sheet of foil can offer, the original Dartmouth study achieved its best numbers using a precisely 3D-printed reflector wrapped in foil, a more exact version of the same idea, built for about $35.
