How 4 cm of rain brought Hyderabad’s IT corridor to a crawl; commuter spends 4 hours covering a few km

Heavy rain across Hyderabad on Tuesday turned roads into bottlenecks, flooded several stretches and uprooted trees in different parts of the city, triggering massive traffic jams that left many commuters stranded for hours. The worst impact was felt during the evening rush hour especially in the city’s IT corridor where office-goers faced long delays in getting back to their homes. Rife on social media were complaints from residents over a few hours of rain bringing normal movement across the city to a standstill.

Hyderabad residents vent frustration online

With the worsening of traffic congestion, many residents of Hyderabad took to the internet to share their experiences. A video shared by X user Uday Kiran Reddy showed a long queue of vehicles stuck in Knowledge City, one of the major corporate hubs in the city.

“Complete standstill at Knowledge City, Hyderabad after just a short spell of rain! This daily struggle in the IT corridor during monsoons is becoming unbearable. Better management and staggered office timings are needed urgently,” one person said in the comments section, calling for better traffic management.

Another commuter described a lengthy journey home after work

“Today it took me 3 hours 45 minutes from Manikonda to home. I was on the Biodiversity Flyover for over 40 minutes. If one day of rain can cause this much havoc, flooded roads and absolutely no traffic control, with the growing fuel prices, who would want to go out in their own cars?”

Cars stranded, roads flooded

Many social media users wondered how one spell of rain could bring the city to such extent of chaos. Sathya posted videos showing vehicles stuck in waterlogged areas. One of the clips also showed a damaged vehicle after a tree has fallen on it.

“Hyderabad is already choking with massive traffic jams and today's rain has created havoc across the city,” he wrote.

Another user, Prasad Peketi, linked the situation to rapid urban growth and concentration of offices in a limited area of the city.

“Rain of 4cms in this season, City is on the knees . Unplanned growth + removal of FSI and concentration of companies at just west of Hyderabad. In this same area recently one acre of Govt land was sold for 240 Crores”

Nearly 10 cm rainfall recorded in some areas

Heavy rains on June 9 have been reported from several parts of Hyderabad, Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data showed. Vinayak Nagar of Malkajgiri registered the highest rainfall of 98.5 mm. Other areas which received good rainfall were Bansilalpet in Begumpet (87.5 mm), Vittalwadi in Amberpet (79.8 mm) and the area near the GHMC Head Office in Secunderabad (78.5 mm).

IT corridor takes the biggest hit

According to a Deccan Chronicle report, rain began during the afternoon and continued into the evening. The city's IT corridor experienced the most severe disruption, with traffic slowing to a near standstill across Madhapur, Hitec City, Gachibowli, Kondapur, Raidurg and surrounding areas.

As thousands of employees headed home, major junctions witnessed heavy congestion. Many commuters reported being stuck on roads for several hours. Some IT professionals remained trapped in Madhapur traffic for more than three hours, while videos circulating on social media showed ambulances struggling to move through clogged roads.

The widespread disruption once again sparked questions among residents about the city's ability to cope with heavy rainfall during the monsoon season.
