A day of adventure turned into horror at Bangkok’s Safari World when a group of lions attacked and killed a zookeeper in full view of stunned visitors. The shocking incident, which unfolded late on the morning of 10 September, has raised pressing questions about safety protocols at one of Thailand’s most popular wildlife attractions.

According to Thaiger, the attack took place at around 11 am when the zookeeper had just stepped out of his vehicle inside the lion zone. One lion, positioned roughly 10 metres away, pounced from behind, dragging the man to the ground. Within moments, three to four other lions joined in, biting and overpowering the victim.

Colonel Dr Thawatchai Kanchanarin, a former professor and surgeon at Phra Mongkut Klao Hospital, told Thaiger that the scene was chaotic. “Many witnesses saw the attack but did not know how to help. Tourists honked their car horns and shouted to get the lions to release him,” he said.

A Fifteen-Minute Struggle

Visitors initially thought the lions were playing or showing familiarity with their caretaker, but the truth soon became evident. Reports suggest the attack lasted close to 15 minutes before officials managed to intervene.

Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the zookeeper succumbed to his injuries. His identity has not yet been made public.

Shock Among Tourists

For many tourists on safari that morning, the incident was nothing short of traumatic. Families and children who had come expecting a day of wonder were left shaken, honking horns and yelling in vain attempts to distract the animals. The sense of helplessness was palpable as the lions continued their assault.

Zoo’s Response and Safety Concerns

Safari World confirmed the tragic loss in a statement carried by Thaiger. “This is a tragic reminder of the risks involved in handling wild animals. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and are committed to reviewing our safety protocols to prevent future incidents,” a spokesperson said.

Zoo authorities have pledged full cooperation with the investigation and assured the public that measures will be reviewed to strengthen safety inside enclosures.
