Holi, also known as the "Festival of Colours" is one of the most anticipated Hindu festivals after Diwali, and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. This year, Holi will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. However, during Holi, people are always concerned about the mix of harsh chemicals, sun, and constant scrubbing, as it can damage your skin. You need to protect your skin and be extra gentle when cleaning up after you have played Holi.

How to remove holi colour from skin

You need to take a few steps before you start playing Holi to avoid damage to your skin. Here are a few of them:

Before Holi (Pre-play protection)

Hydrate skin deeply

Apply a rich moisturiser or natural oil (like coconut, almond, or olive oil) all over your face and body to create a protective barrier that makes colours easier to wash off before you step out to play Holi.

Use sunscreen

Apply a broad‑spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) at least 20‑30 minutes before stepping out — this protects skin from UV damage and reduces colour penetration.

Apply petroleum jelly

A layer of oil or petroleum jelly on sensitive spots (lips, behind ears, near hairline) stops colours from sticking and irritating your skin. Use it before playing with colours.

Protect your lips and nails

Apply lip balm to keep lips soft and stain‑free. Coat nails with clear nail polish or petroleum jelly to prevent colour staining.

Wear protective clothing

Choose full‑sleeved cotton outfits and light‑coloured clothes to cover more skin and minimise direct contact with wet or dry colours.

Don't do heavy makeup

Skip heavy makeup before Holi — it can mix with colours and clog pores. If needed, keep it light (like waterproof mascara or tinted sunscreen).

Avoid harsh skin treatments just before Holi

Don’t get facials, peels, waxing, or exfoliation a few days before — these make the skin more sensitive to irritation.

During playing Holi, re‑apply sunscreen every 2–3 hours to maintain protection if the need arises. Drinking water keeps skin supple and helps reduce dryness and irritation after colour exposure.

After Holi (Post-play recovery)

Rinse gently with lukewarm water

Wash your skin with lukewarm water to wash off loose colour. Avoid hot water, which can dry and irritate skin.

Use a gentle cleanser

Follow up with a mild, sulfate‑free face wash. Avoid harsh scrubs or soaps that strip natural oils.

Don’t scrub hard

Avoid aggressive scrubbing — it can cause micro‑tears in the skin and increase irritation.

Soothe with a mask or aloe vera

Apply a hydrating mask or fresh aloe vera gel to calm redness and replenish moisture.

Moisturise again immediately

After cleansing, use a rich moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration.

Avoid makeup for 1–2 days

Give your skin time to breathe and recover, especially if irritation appears.
