A new report has warned that the Himalayas are heading towards a serious water crisis, with glaciers now losing mass 65 percent faster than they were a decade ago. The report, titled Prosperous and Resilient Himalayas, says close to 200 glacial lakes across the region have been rated high risk, of which 56 fall in the very high risk category in India alone.

The report was prepared by Systemiq and the Integrated Mountain Initiative, with the G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment as a knowledge partner and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development contributing technical research. It was supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and comes as an abridged emergency version, ahead of a fuller report expected in October.

Rivers at risk


The report says rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna and Brahmaputra depend heavily on water flowing down from the Himalayas, and that the glacial lakes feeding this system are becoming increasingly unstable. As glaciers retreat, they leave behind lakes held back by little more than loose rock and ice, sitting above valleys where millions of people live.

It warns the region is also nearing what it calls peak water, the point at which glacier meltwater stops rising and starts falling. Most Himalayan river basins are expected to hit this stage by the middle of this century, and the Hindu Kush Himalaya could lose up to 80 percent of its current glacier volume by 2100 if current trends continue.

20 percent of India's GDP at stake

The report finds that Himalayan water systems underpin more than 20 percent of India's GDP once their full downstream reach is counted, supporting agriculture across the Indo-Gangetic plain, tea cultivation in Assam and Bengal, hydropower in the Northeast, and pilgrimage economies further downstream. Despite this, the Himalayan states that steward these systems capture only around 5 percent of the value themselves, with most of the benefit flowing to states that rarely think of the mountains as their own until a flood or drought strikes.

The report also points out that the Himalayas make up just 18 percent of India's land but account for 35 percent of the country's disasters, citing the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, the 2021 Chamoli disaster and the 2023 Sikkim glacial lake outburst flood as examples of the scale of damage such events can cause.

A chain of disasters in Nepal

The report draws heavily on the August 26, 2026 disaster on the Nepal-Tibet border, where a glacier collapse triggered a landslide, which then formed a dam, which then gave way as a flood, all within two hours. It describes this as four disasters rolled into one, with debris and bodies later found as far downstream as India, showing how quickly a single glacial event can cascade across borders.

Pollution speeding up the melt

Alongside global warming, the report identifies black carbon pollution drifting up from the plains as a major driver of glacier loss, linking roughly a third of Himalayan glacier melt to soot largely produced by brick kilns. Unlike global warming, the report notes this is a problem the region can act on directly, and it proposes a dedicated fund to clean up kiln emissions as one of ten priority actions.

Ten fixes, and a call for coordinated action

The report lays out ten transitions it says are needed to build a more resilient Himalayan region, ranging from reviving dried up springs to setting up early warning systems for glacial hazards. It estimates these transitions could deliver an average return of roughly 8 times for every rupee invested once their economic, ecological and social value is counted together.

Why the report says this matters

The report argues that money is currently not reaching the Himalayas at the scale needed, even though building anything in the region costs roughly 2.5 times more than in the plains. It says public spending already carries a larger share of the burden than the national average, while private investment remains low, and calls for a mix of government funding, private capital and citizen contributions to close the gap.


Lord Nicholas Stern, chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics, said the Himalayas function as the Third Pole and, unlike the Arctic or Antarctic, sit beneath hundreds of millions of people, making their protection central to the region's future prosperity.

Dr Pema Gyamtsho, director general of ICIMOD, said the Hindu Kush Himalaya is changing rapidly, with glaciers retreating and mountain slopes growing unstable, and added that the risks now extend well beyond glacial lake outburst floods and do not respect national borders.
