Highest individual score in Test cricket: From Wiaan Mulder to Brian Lara, check highest Test scores by batsmen

South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder is on the brink of rewriting Test cricket history, as he remained unbeaten on 367 at lunch on Day 2 against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo. The 27-year-old captain declared the innings at lunch as South Africa posted 625/5 runs.

Mulder, captaining South Africa for the first time, broke several major records during this innings. He became the first player in the history of Test cricket to score a triple century on captaincy debut. His knock has now become the highest-ever individual score on captaincy debut, surpassing the previous record of 239 set by New Zealand’s Graham Dowling against India in 1969.

Mulder also overtook Graeme Smith’s 277 to record the highest score by a South African captain in Tests. He also surpassed Hashim Amla's 311* against England in 2012.


With 367* off 334 balls, Mulder’s innings ranks among the top ten individual scores in Test cricket history. He has overtaken innings like Len Hutton’s 364 and Sanath Jayasuriya’s 340 and is inching closer to the top five.

Wiaan Mulder becomes youngest test captain to score triple century

Mulder became the youngest Test captain to score a triple century at 27 years and 138 days, breaking Bob Simpson’s 1964 record. He also reached his triple hundred in just 297 balls, the second-fastest in Test history after Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball triple ton in 2008.
