After India's six-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, the hashtag - #BoycottIPL - started trending on microblogging site Twitter.

Many of the tweets under the hashtag point to one common gripe - that the Indian Premier League is responsible for the India national team's disappointing Asia Cup run.

"Indian team has lost the will to win matches for the country. Lousy body language," wrote one user, lamenting the two Super 4 losses India suffered at the hands of its neighbours.

The armchair pundits of India have declared the cash-rich league a liability, responsible for the bad form of players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and are calling for the tournament to be axed.

Fatigue is a very real component thanks to the Indian team's stuffed schedule, with the Rohit-led team playing multiple tours before ending up at the Asia Cup.

In the group stages of the Asia Cup, India was pitted against arch rivals Pakistan and Hong Kong, and managed to beat both teams to seal a spot in the Super 4.

But, once they were in the knockout stage, the men in blue seemingly collapsed, first losing to Pakistan and then to Sri Lanka, all but ensuring an exit from the competition.

Against Sri Lanka, captain Rohit Sharma’s 72 off 41 went in vain as the Lankans produced a perfect performance to defeat the boys in blue. India failed to defend a total of 173, with Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendi (57 off 37) and Pathum Nissanka (52 off 37) putting the game beyond a doubt.

India have one more match remaining in the tournament, against Afghanistan, set to take place on Thursday, whose outcome is unlikely to affect the team's standing and will only confirm their exit from the tournament.
