Former Indian opening batsman, Virender Sehwag, has come up with a zany idea for World Cup qualification following Sri Lanka's Asia Cup victory against Pakistan on Sunday.

"Wouldn't it be interesting if you lose to a team that hasn't qualified you too lose qualification," asked the ace cricketer in a tweet post the final match of the Asia Cup.

Sri Lanka sealed a final stage win against Pakistan to win the 2022 Asia Cup, restricting the Babar Azam-led team to 147 after setting a 171 run target for them. The Dasun Shanaka-led side have been a treat to watch throughout the Asia Cup, losing only one match - to Afghanistan - all tournament.

Sehwag's qualification comment stems from the fact that Sri Lanka does not have direct qualification to the T20 World Cup this year, which means they will have to go through a series of qualifiers to make it to the October tourney.

Adding to the difficulty of qualification is the state of the island nation's political climate, with their government having collapsed and the country facing a severe recession.

The responses to Sehwag's suggestion have been varied, with one aggrieved Indian fan saying India should give up its spot, while another said the Sri Lankan team deserves a wild card entry into the tournament.
