Mussoorie viral video

A visit to a popular viewpoint in Mussoorie turned into an unexpected clean-up drive for an Indian content creator and his Taiwanese friend after they found the area covered in plastic waste and discarded food wrappers. Digital creator Anant M (@onroadindian) shared a video showing himself and his companion collecting empty plastic bottles, snack packets and other rubbish scattered across Dalai Hills. The duo had initially planned to enjoy the scenic surroundings, but the condition of the tourist spot prompted them to do something about the waste.

What caught the attention of social media users was the Taiwanese visitor's willingness to pick up litter despite having come to India as a tourist. The video also showed other visitors standing nearby, with no one appearing to join the clean-up effort.

According to Anant, he had taken his Taiwanese friend to Dalai Hills, a popular location near his hometown, to show her the area's natural beauty.

However, the sight of plastic bottles and food packaging scattered across the hillside left them disappointed. Instead of continuing with their sightseeing plans, they decided to collect the rubbish lying around.

In the video, Anant expressed his embarrassment over the condition of the place and questioned why visitors bought food from nearby stalls only to leave the packaging behind.

He also highlighted the lack of participation from other people present at the spot.

Visibly upset by the situation, he said, "This is what Indians can do. It's a shame that these Taiwanese have to come to India and clean up" (translated from Hindi).

His friend continued collecting the waste even when Anant suggested that she did not need to clean up after other visitors. The two eventually found a large plastic bag and gathered the rubbish for disposal.

Explaining the incident in his social media post, Anant said he had wanted to introduce his friend to a scenic destination close to Mussoorie.

"My friend from Republic of China, Taiwan, visited India to travel. I was showing her around. I took her to a place near my hometown, Mussoorie, we went to Dalai Hills. I was shocked by the trash spread there everywhere, and so we both decided to clean it up," he wrote.

The creator also urged tourists to take responsibility for the waste they generate while travelling.

He pointed out that visitors should carry their empty bottles and food wrappers until they find a dustbin instead of leaving them behind at tourist destinations.

Mussoorie viral video sparks debate over civic sense and tourist behaviour

The video prompted strong reactions online, with several users appreciating the Taiwanese visitor's efforts and expressing disappointment over the littering at Dalai Hills.

Some social media users also recalled the area's earlier association with spirituality and its relatively peaceful surroundings.

One local user expressed disappointment, saying the hill had once been a sacred place where people offered prayers rather than a crowded tourist attraction.

Others questioned the lack of civic responsibility among visitors and called for greater awareness about keeping public spaces clean.

Several users also pointed out that littering is a recurring problem at popular hill stations across India, where plastic packaging and discarded bottles often spoil otherwise scenic locations.

Dalai Hills in Mussoorie

Dalai Hills is known for its peaceful surroundings, scenic views and Buddhist prayer flags. Its cultural and spiritual associations also make it an important attraction for visitors exploring Mussoorie.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the environmental pressure faced by popular tourist destinations. Increasing visitor numbers, combined with irresponsible waste disposal, can affect the natural surroundings and spoil the experience for other travellers.

While the clean-up efforts of Anant and his Taiwanese friend received appreciation online, the incident also raises a larger question about individual responsibility.

Keeping tourist destinations clean does not require elaborate campaigns. Carrying back plastic bottles, disposing of food wrappers properly and avoiding littering are simple steps that every visitor can follow.
