"I opened the website, looked at my score and froze. My first thought was, 'This can't be my result,'" he recalled.
The disappointment became more intense when he saw several of his friends scoring above 90%. He found himself questioning his own performance and wondering how his marks had fallen so low.
Low marks made him worry about what others would think
For Jainendrajeet, the difficult part was not simply seeing a low number on his marksheet. He was also concerned about how his parents and people around him would react."How did I get such low marks?" was one of the questions going through his mind after seeing the result.
But instead of allowing the disappointment to continue, he decided to separate his Class 10 performance from his long-term potential. He reminded himself, "This isn't who you are. You're better than this."
That mindset helped him approach the next stage of his education differently.
How Jainendrajeet changed his study routine
After Class 10, Jainendrajeet introduced more discipline into his daily schedule. He set fixed study hours, reduced distractions and limited his use of social media. His study time gradually increased to nearly 10 hours a day. However, he focused not only on spending more time with his books but also on making those hours more productive.
He developed a structured approach that involved preparing ahead of classroom lessons, setting specific goals and regularly testing his understanding through questions.
Three study habits that helped his JEE preparation
Jainendrajeet highlighted three practices that became important parts of his preparation.First, he started studying topics before they were taught in class. Educational YouTube videos helped him gain an initial understanding of concepts so that classroom lessons became easier to follow.
Second, he began setting clear targets for each day. Instead of studying without a defined objective, he knew what he wanted to complete before ending his study session.
Third, he solved Previous Year Questions (PYQs) after finishing each chapter. This helped him understand how concepts were tested in competitive examinations and identify areas where he needed more practice.
From 54% in boards to 99.98 percentile in JEE Main
The sustained change in his preparation eventually reflected in his competitive examination results.Jainendrajeet secured 99.98 percentile in JEE Main 2023 and followed it with an All India Rank of 349 in JEE Advanced. The achievement marked a remarkable contrast with his Class 10 board result.
Looking back at his preparation, he said, "If I wanted to achieve something meaningful in life, excuses would no longer work."
His JEE Advanced performance eventually got him into IIT Bombay's Computer Science programme, marking a huge turnaround from his Class 10 result.
Going from 54% in Class 10 to securing a top rank in JEE Advanced shows that one bad result does not decide where a student will end up. Jainendrajeet changed the way he studied, stayed consistent and kept working towards his goal instead of letting his earlier marks hold him back.
For students disappointed with their board results, his story shows that one exam is just one chapter in the journey and does not decide what they can achieve in the future.
