Have old towels at home? Try these 5 simple and useful ways to reuse them instead of throwing them away

Old towels often become rough, faded or less absorbent after years of use, but that does not necessarily mean they need to go straight into the bin. With a little cutting and basic DIY work, worn-out towels can be repurposed into useful items around the house. From cleaning cloths to pet towels and protective mats, here are five simple ways to give old towels a second life.

1. Turn An Old Towel Into A Bath Mat

If a towel is still reasonably thick but no longer comfortable to use after a shower, it can be repurposed as a small bath mat. Cut the towel into the desired size and, if possible, finish the edges with a simple stitch to prevent excessive fraying. Place it outside the shower or bathtub to absorb water from wet feet. For extra thickness, two pieces of towel can be layered and stitched together.

2. Make Reusable Cleaning Cloths

Old towels are excellent candidates for household cleaning because their fabric can absorb water and pick up dirt. Cut them into smaller squares and use them to wipe kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, windows, furniture and other areas around the home. Keep separate pieces for different cleaning tasks, particularly for kitchens and bathrooms, to maintain better hygiene.

3. Make A Towel For Your Pet

If you have a dog or cat, an old towel can become a dedicated pet towel. Keep one near the bathroom for drying your pet after a bath and another near the entrance for wiping muddy or wet paws after walks. Towels that have become too rough for personal use can still be useful for this purpose, provided they are clean and free from loose threads that could cause problems.

4. Create A Protective Mat For Floors And Furniture

Thicker old towels can be placed underneath plant pots, cleaning buckets, shoes or other items that may leave water on the floor. They can also be used temporarily under furniture during cleaning or moving to help protect surfaces from minor scratches, moisture and dirt. For plant pots, make sure the towel does not remain constantly soaked, as prolonged moisture can lead to unpleasant odours or damage certain flooring materials.

5. Make Reusable Kitchen Or Household Wipes

Instead of buying disposable wipes for every small spill, cut an old towel into manageable pieces and keep them in a designated basket. They can be useful for wiping spills, drying washed utensils, cleaning appliances or handling messy household tasks. Once used, simply wash them and reuse them.

Before repurposing an old towel, wash it thoroughly and check for loose threads, damaged edges or mould. Towels with persistent mould, unpleasant odours or significant deterioration are better discarded rather than reused around the home.

It is also a good idea to assign different towel pieces to different purposes. For example, keep separate cloths for bathrooms, kitchens, floors and pets.
