Hartalika Teej story: Parvati’s devotion to Shiva
According to the traditional Hartalika Teej story, Goddess Parvati undertook severe tapasya to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. However, her father had another marriage proposal in mind for her.Parvati’s friend is believed to have taken her away to a forest so that she could continue her penance and remain committed to the person she had chosen. The story forms the basis of the festival and its association with devotion, determination and steadfastness.
The name Hartalika is traditionally understood through the words “Harat”, associated with abduction, and “Aalika”, meaning a female friend. The name therefore reflects the story of Parvati being taken away by her friend.
Pleased with Parvati’s devotion and penance, Lord Shiva eventually accepted her as his companion.
For devotees, the story represents more than the union of Shiva and Parvati. It is regarded as a symbol of patience, dedication, faith and the determination to remain committed to a sincere spiritual purpose.
Hartalika Teej 2026 Puja Vidhi and fasting
Many women observe a strict fast during Hartalika Teej. In several traditions, the vrat is observed as a Nirjala Vrat, which means abstaining from both food and water. However, fasting practices differ across families and regions, and individual health and medical needs should take priority. The puja area is cleaned before worship, while devotees traditionally prepare or worship representations of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In some traditions, their forms are made using sand or clay.
Flowers, fruits, bel leaves and other customary puja offerings are presented to Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati is worshipped with Shringar items, including bangles, sindoor and other traditional adornments.
Devotees then listen to or read the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha as part of the observance. Prayers are offered for stability, harmony and mutual respect in married life.
Significance of Hartalika Teej and Parvati’s patience
The significance of Hartalika Teej is closely connected with Goddess Parvati’s patience and determination. Her tapasya is traditionally viewed as an example of discipline strengthened by devotion, particularly when the desired path is difficult. The festival’s message therefore extends beyond the traditional prayer for marital happiness. It highlights qualities such as commitment, patience, self-respect, responsibility and faith as important elements of meaningful relationships.
For unmarried women, the vrat may be observed as a prayer for a compatible relationship based on mutual respect rather than marriage alone. For married devotees, the story of Shiva and Parvati can represent the importance of maintaining balance, understanding and commitment within a relationship.
