The day begins with an early morning bath using a mixture of sesame and amla powder, followed by dressing in fine clothes and jewelry. Women then take a vow (Sankalp) to observe the Hartalika Vrat to please Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

The Puja starts with the worship of Lord Ganesh, as is customary in Hindu rituals, before moving on to the Shodashopachara (sixteen-step) Puja of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The Hartalika story is narrated during the Puja, emphasizing the significance of the festival.

Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha

Once upon a time, Goddess Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan, deeply desired to marry Lord Shiva. To win his love, she performed intense penance for many years, enduring severe hardships. Despite her father’s attempts to marry her off to Lord Vishnu, Parvati remained devoted to Lord Shiva and continued her penance in a forest.

Seeing her unwavering devotion, one of Parvati’s close friends took her away to a dense forest to prevent her father from forcing her into marriage with Vishnu. There, Parvati continued her penance with even greater determination.

Moved by her devotion, Lord Shiva finally appeared before her and accepted her as his consort. This event is believed to be the origin of the Hartalika Teej festival, where women honor Goddess Parvati’s devotion and pray for a harmonious married life.

On this day, women worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati by making their idols from clay or sand. They observe a strict fast and perform the Puja with great devotion, narrating this katha as part of the ritual.

The story symbolizes the strength, devotion, and determination of women, particularly in matters of love and marriage. By observing Hartalika Teej, women seek the blessings of Goddess Parvati for a happy and prosperous married life, just as Parvati was blessed by Lord Shiva.
