Happy Birthday Silambarasan: Here is how the actor changed his image from Manmadhan to Atman

Silambarasan, also known as Simbu, used to project himself as the "bad boy" of Tamil cinema, but at 40, things changed.

Tamil actor Silambarasan turns a year older today (Feb 3). Simbu, son of T Rajendar, began his career as a child actor in films such as 'En Thangai Kalyani' and 'Samsara Sangeetham'. As a result, when Simbu made his lead acting debut in 'Kadhal Azhivathillai', he already had fans who erected cut-outs and banners for him.

However, Simbu was pleasantly surprised by the reception of his film 'Manmadhan' (2004). Any long-time Simbu fan will recall the film's poster, which was both scandalous and creative for its time. Each letter of the word 'Manmadhan' was made up of the names of red women. When the film was released, the actor, who was also credited with the story, was chastised for his portrayal of women.

Simbu had a couple of hits before 'Manmadhan', including 'Kovil and Kuthu', but the adult film gave him the identity and image of a 'playboy' in K-Town. Simbu became synonymous with the word controversy over time. From leaked private photos to the "Beep Song," to broken relationships and squabbles with directors, Simbu's life was never easy. 'Silambattam' and 'Vallavan', both of which relied on his playboy image, didn't help his off-screen persona either. Then 'Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya' appeared!

The film was titled 'Jessie' when Gautham Menon pitched it to Simbu. Simbu nevertheless took the opportunity to redeem himself and develop into this "chocolate boy." Following the success of the romantic drama, the actor faced a new problem that would follow him for the next decade. Reports of Simbu being late and irregular to film shoots began to circulate in 'Kodambakkam', and things reached a climax when rumours of Simbu dubbing for 'Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan' from his restroom spread like wildfire.

On top of that, there was another issue that began to limit his opportunities: his fitness. Simbu was probably at his lowest point when he had to deal with so many problems at once. The awakening occurred while he was filming Mani Ratnam's 'Chekka Chivantha Vaanam'. Simbu expressed his disappointment when he realised he couldn't even run for a scene in the film. The pandemic assisted the star in becoming a better version of himself, whom he now refers to as "Atman," and that marked the beginning of his journey toward redemption.
