Hanuman Chalisa calms baby in 5 seconds, Chinese woman shows video; puts him to sleep in 2 minutes, says businesswoman; Here’s her 4-month-old’s parenting routine

For new parents, soothing a crying baby can involve everything from rocking and singing lullabies to walking around the house late at night. Chinese businesswoman Sarah Jane Ho, however, says she has found an unexpected way to calm her four-month-old son, Baby J — playing the Hanuman Chalisa.

Ho, who became a mother at 40, said she was introduced to the devotional prayer by Indian friends she met at Burning Man. She now turns to the Hanuman Chalisa whenever her baby becomes fussy and says it appears to have an almost immediate effect.

“When baby is fussy or melting down, playing the Indian song Hanuman Chalisa calms him within 5 seconds and puts him to sleep in 2 minutes,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

Ho said she has now started playing the devotional prayer on a loop every morning. Her post about her experiences with Baby J attracted attention online, especially for the unusual inclusion of a Hindu devotional prayer in the daily routine of a Chinese mother living in Los Angeles.

Ho says she does not follow ‘cry it out’ method

Ho also shared that she does not believe in allowing her baby to cry without immediately responding. She said she prefers to pick him up whenever he starts crying.

“For the first 9 months baby doesn’t realize he’s a separate entity so whenever he cries I IMMEDIATELY pick him up,” she wrote, adding, “I don’t believe in letting him ‘cry it out’.”

Brahms’ lullaby features in Baby J’s routine

The Hanuman Chalisa is not the only music Ho has incorporated into her son’s daily routine. She said she plays Brahms’ lullaby for eight minutes every day, based on her belief that some data suggests the music could help a baby’s brain develop faster.

At the same time, Ho clarified that she was sharing her personal parenting approach rather than laying down a set of rules for other parents. She acknowledged that some of the practices she follows are based on her own intuition rather than established scientific evidence.

Ho shares her approach to preventing food allergies

Ho also discussed how she is approaching the possibility of food allergies. She said Baby J is being breastfed with milk pumped by his surrogate and that she sends peanuts and soy milk to the surrogate, hoping that early exposure could help prevent allergies later.

“I’ve no idea if this is scientifically proven, I’m just following my intuition,” she wrote.

Baby J spends time around dogs

Ho said she is following a similar approach when it comes to exposure to pets. She deliberately allows Baby J to spend time around dogs belonging to friends and neighbours, hoping that early exposure could reduce the possibility of pet allergies in the future.

Ho describes barefoot outdoor time as ‘grounding’

Another part of Baby J’s routine involves allowing him to spend time outdoors with his bare feet touching natural surfaces. Ho said she lets his feet come into contact with stone, grass and dirt in the garden, describing the practice as “grounding”.

She believes this practice supports neurological and physical development and referred to the large number of nerve endings in babies’ feet. These views, however, are Ho’s personal beliefs and practices and were not established as medical guidance in her post.

Ho asks fellow parents for parenting tips

Towards the end of her Instagram post, Ho asked other parents to share their own suggestions and experiences that she could try with her four-month-old son.

“Any more tips you can share with me that I can try out with baby J?” she asked.

Ho also directed followers interested in learning more about her surrogacy journey to an episode of her podcast, Hot Water.
